Placement in a Child's Room
Hang lower than you would in a living room. The art is for the person who lives in the room, and a piece at the child's eye level actually gets looked at. Is canvas safer than glass in a child's room?
A canvas sits on a wooden frame with no glass pane, so there's nothing that can shatter if the piece comes down. It also weighs considerably less than a glazed piece in the same format, which is the most common reason parents choose canvas here. Hang beside a crib rather than directly above it, and fasten it securely either way.

Which subjects last longest in a child's room?
Animals, nature, space and simple shapes carry across several ages, unlike characters tied to a particular series or film. A piece the child outgrows in a year needs replacing, while an animal piece can often move along all the way to the teenage room.

How high should it hang in a child's room?
Lower than in an adult room. Work from the child's eye level rather than your own, which usually puts the centre of the image 90 to 110 cm above the floor. Above a bed or a dresser, work from the top of the furniture instead.

What size suits a child's room?
Children's rooms are usually smaller than the rest of the house, and a single mid-size piece tends to do more than several small ones spread around. Above a bed a wide landscape format works best, while a narrow wall by the wardrobe carries an upright subject better.

Does the matte surface matter here?
More than in most rooms. A night-light or a low lamp throws light at an angle that a glazed piece reflects straight back, while satin-matte canvas absorbs it. The image stays readable at the hour when a child is most likely to be looking at it.

Can the piece move to another room later?
Yes, and it's a reason to choose subjects that aren't tied to a particular age. Canvas is easy to move since it has no glass, and the same piece often works just as well in a home office or a hallway the day the room changes function.
